Experience one of the cultural jewels of the Northwest when you book American Airlines flights to Portland. Explore the vast urban nature center of Forest Park, buy local handicrafts while listening to bluegrass at the Saturday Market, and try some of the area’s renowned microbreweries when you fly to Portland with American Airlines.
Find harmony at the Portland Japanese Garden, composed of five thematic sections for relaxation and contemplation. The Sand and Stone Garden may be most striking, with its dry features and minimalist landscaping, while the Tea Garden will transport you to Tokyo. With some luck, your visit will coincide with a tea ceremony.
Pick fruit with the family at the Portland Saturday Market, a riverfront jamboree of 350 vendors and artisans selling homespun food and handmade crafts. The market’s long heritage—it’s been going strong nearly 40 years—makes it a community institution. Even if you’re not shopping for wooden bunion lamps or a bag of kettlecorn, there’s plenty of free musical performances to keep you entertained.
Dive into the nightlife of the Pearl District, the city’s historic warehouse area and longtime brewing center. Microbrew pubs like Bridgeport Brew Pub, Deschutes Brewery & Public House and Rogues Ale Distillery & Public House carry the torch lit by Henry Weinhard, who established his long-running brand here some 140 years ago.
Walk the paths of Forest Park, Portland’s green heart and the biggest city park in the U.S. Some 70 miles of trails, the longest of which is the 30-mile Wildwood Trail (though you can just tackle portions if you like), lead you to evergreen forests filled with 100 bird species from woodpeckers to thrushes and the ruins of the 70-year-old Stone House.
Forecast the weather at Pioneer Courthouse Square, where the sculptural “Weather Machine” signals at noon what the upcoming day will be like. The square holds other strange public art, like the Mile Post Sign, and is home to lots of open-air concerts and a regular Farmers Market. Consider dining a few blocks away at Southpark Seafood or Higgins, both specializing in local, sustainable food.
Book your flight to Portland with American Airlines today to see some of Portland’s best attractions.
Follow American Airlines as we go off the beaten path to discover more great things to do in Portland. Ski the local top spot at Mount Hood, browse the world’s largest bookstore and see which local tipple—coffee or wine—most pleases your palate. American will be with you every step of the way.
Ski Mount Hood, Portland’s urban adventure getaway. Come wintertime, Mt. Hood offers ski runs for beginners and experts. Especially challenging are the runs at Mt. Hood Skibowl. In fair weather, walk the wildflower-strewn fields of Mt. Hood Meadows or take the family to Mirror Lake, an easy trail with a reflective view at its conclusion. Whenever you go, visit historic Timberline Lodge, the hotel featured in a few scenes of Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining.
Wine taste in the Willamette Valley. Just southwest of Portland, this verdant river valley is home to over 200 wineries. Sample the pinot noirs for which the area is best-known: Broadley Vineyards and Shea Vineyards are two small producers to look for. Make it a day-trip or base yourself in a central spot like artsy Newberg.
Browse miles of paperbacks in Powell’s City of Books. It might seem odd for a bookstore to be a must-see, but this is the biggest bookstore in the world, purportedly holding more than a million titles. Scanning the shelves for some used treasure is a treat, and there’s a rare book room, near-daily readings and art on display upstairs to boot.
Visit the Pittock Mansion, to look around an early 20th-century chateau fortunately spared from demolition. The central spiral staircase is a marvel and old family portraits and photographs evoke Victorian times, but the views from the lawn, up here in the West Hills 1,000 ft. above the city, are reason enough to visit.
Explore counterculture on Portland’s east side. The Hawthorne, Belmont and Alberts Arts districts are among the funkiest in the city, full of thrift shops, multicultural galleries, hip boutiques and the cafés and coffeehouses Portland is known for. Local legend Stumptown Coffee Roasters has two east side locations (its original ones), while the delightfully titled Rimsky-Korsakoffee House is as quirky inside as its Craftsman-style building is outside.
